NAKED ON THE ROCKS

A One Woman Show
By MICHELE MELE
April 23rd, 2008
Revival Lounge at 8pm

Toronto – NAKED ON THE ROCKS, a sassy one-woman show by Canadian jazz-singer songwriter MICHELE MELE is back at Revival after sold out runs in 2007. This time includes Russ Boswell,a household name to the Toronto Music scene, on bass and Marco Luciani on piano, who is coming in from L.A. just to do the show! Along with Russ and Marco will be Michele's brother, the illustrious John Mele on drums and multi talented guitarist Lou Bartolomucci all rippin' it up.

"A dazzling one-woman show that lets Mele strut her stuff — from jazz to rock to country, and all of it delivered with her trademark passion and energy."
- Liz Braun. Toronto Sun

MICHELE MELE has done it all! Born into a family of professional musicians, she has been writing songs for over twenty five years and is a graduate of U of T in Music. She has directed plays, musicals and composes various classical works for orchestra and choir. Michele has released three albums in the jazz genre of original music. Her voice has been compared to Ani diFranco by the 20-year-old set and to Peggy Lee by older jazzers but she is, however, a true original with a vibrance all her own.

"By parenthesizing her original compositions within the format of a stage performance, MICHELE MELE has discovered the optimum forum for her unique talent. The next time that NAKED ON THE ROCKS or any of her future shows are scheduled, run — don't walk - to experience this rare and exceptional artist... but be sure to bring along your open heart, thirsty ear and a willingness to join Michele on her magical journey of spirit and song."
- Lesley Mitchell-Clarke www.thelivemusicreport.com

NAKED ON THE ROCKS is a playful, witty, intelligent and sensitive must-see show and the result of a year of tremendous personal growth and discovery for MICHELE. The music is inspiring and explores the world outside of jazz, crossing over to pop, Latin, rock, and country.

Feedback: Michele Mele is the full package of great writer and singer. Her playful swagger on "What's So Funny" is a sure fire opener, and to follow "I Can't Sing the Blues" just puts the icing on the musical cake. "Stop Talking" completes a great listening journey. There is no musical or vocal filler on this album. The band is inventive, sensitive and tight. What more could you ask for? "Feel" has it all,and has found a secure place on my "Jazz Infusions" playlist. Robin On The Radio 2TENFM 89.7 and 98.7 Tenterfield(New South Wales and Stanthorpe (Queensland) Australia

Feedback: What a pleasant surprize was my first reaction when I placed this CD in my player and heard what was emanating from the speakers. Everything from Latin to a blues tune that just knocked the socks off my tired feet. This CD has it all and it will make your day. It did mine. Enjoy! Feedback: MICHELE MELE - Feel What a feel. Good music at a high level and good vocal and instrumental feeling. Working side by side with her friends musicians, bringing their own compositions to tasteful arrangements, female singer MICHELE MELE gives us a proof of great composing taste, creative power and singing beauty. When she brings again to life also the classics (Beginning To See The Light, You Must Believe In Spring) we can really measure the level of her musical art. Feel and taste. But now Stop Talking: when we begin to listen to the album, beauty and Simplicity comes to us, when she Sing also The Blues, it seems to us to listen Costa Rican Birds or To See The Light, thanks to her voice we Must Believe In Spring. What's So Funny. Preferred tracks: 3 Perspectivity - 1 What's So Funny

Feedback: Rare talented vocalist who will raise a few eyebrows with her latest effort! Excellent production and happy-go-lucky and impeccable performance by Michele with excellent band cooking behind her. I'd like to check her vocals in live setting as I'm sure she's doing great job that way too. This is music with a variety of influences should be in everyone's collection. Michelle struts her stuff with verve and passion, and even with generous playing time, one is sorry when this CD is over. We want more!

Feedback: Yes, we loved Michele Mele. Tracks 1, 3, 4 and 11 will be presented soon to our audience on Radio 943, Kumla, Sweden. Then you ought to know we never before played so many songs in a row from a single artist. We love the songs for many reasons, firstly their originality both in subjects and melodies. Very refreshing! For us it's a happy discovery of a new voice developíng the art of jazzsinging. Michele also has the good taste to surround herself with very spritzy people, wonderful musicians, making the tunes so tasty. Chapeau!

Local women make good (music)

Feel – Michele Mele ***
Here's another discovery — for me, anyway. This time, very much in the jazz vein. In fact, Michele Mele kept reminding me of other singers although, finally, her musical identity is very much her own. The first of the dozen tracks here, for instance, is the slightly chirpy, slightly sexy What's So Funny, which features Mele in the bright, oddly seductive girlish mode of Blossom Dearie. That's the mode in which I like her best. But she has others.
Mele has penned all the songs here except for Duke Ellington's classic Beginning to See the Light, in which she varies the song's standard phrasing interestingly, and a very Gallic reading of the Michel LeGrand and Jacques Demy hit You Must Believe in Spring.
There's a decidedly Latin cast to several of the songs, including Costa Rica Birds — though the vocal track's just the tiniest bit muddy on this one — and Cara Boo. And again, there's that interesting, jazzy, clipped phrasing. It's also there on Why Choose, in which Michael Stuart's tenor sax is a perfect accompaniment to Mele's sultriest offering here.

In fact, Mele's whole backing band — which features Toronto stalwarts Bernie Senensky on piano and Guido Basso on flugelhorn, as well as Lew Mele (the singer's husband, I assume) on bass — is sharp and tight, a night club in a jewel box.

Feedback: From the beginning to the last  piece of music, the last sound, the last note, Michele Mele has made us travel  with her touch, serenity, love, and all of those kind of things that makes  music a part of human's soul. I hope you don't mind, I have the original Cd at  the station but have made a copy for my car audio!!! There're very good songs  on it. "Cara Boo", "You mjust believe in Spring", Simplicity... just to name a  few. "Feel" is an human thing. Michele Mele and her music is now one of our  feelings. Me and my listeners.
